Everyone’s gotta be #1 at something…

Monday, April 28th, 2008

And apparently Fulton County, Georgia wants to let people know that they are "#1 in syphilis" (thanks to reader M for taking and sending in the photo to me today). Actually, many counties are experiencing an increase in syphilis rates. Syphilis can be transmitted via oral, vaginal and anal sex. Though condom use can greatly reduce the risk of infection, it cannot always completely eliminate the risk for infection transmission. Read more about this sexually transmissible infection (STI) on the CDC web site here.

Wow - this headline ("Penis Theft Panic Hits City") - is certainly a classic. Read the full article here.

Can one masturbate too much?

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Some researchers might say no - well, at least within reason (it may be "too much" if you are masturbating to the point of hurting your genitals, or if it is getting in the way of work/school/relationships and causing you distress). But other than that, get out the lube! We’ve known for some time now that frequent ejaculation when one is young (whether from partner sex or solo masturbation) was associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer as one ages… but this study specifically looked at the masturbation aspect and found a markedly reduced risk of prostate cancer among frequent masturbators. My thoughts on virginity

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Texas Tech University’s psychology department produces podcasts and a recent podcast was about virginity. Listen to the podcast (which includes clips from an interview with me) here. It was a phone interview, so it turned out a little fuzzy, but they did a very nice job stringing the clips and issues together. This particular group at TTU is doing important work by taking complex issues in the area of psychology and human experience and making podcasts about them.

An unexpected interview

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Journalism students often have assignments that include interviewing someone and writing an article about the interview. My colleagues and I can usually count on about 3-4 student interview requests per semester. We are happy to participate, but as they are for class assignments, we rarely get to see the finished piece.

Now at least one journalism class is now posting theirs online - here is a recent interview that I participated in for student Sara Hess. Had I known that anyone would ever see the photos she snapped of me I would have perhaps tried to look a little nicer, but alas, this is reality and I dress comfortably and casually for work, and often show up with my hair still damp from my morning shower. The interview references my research, education, column writing and even MSP.

Happy reading!
