About Dr. Debby Herbenick

Dr. Debby Herbenick, author of Because It Feels Good: A Woman’s Guide to Sexual Pleasure and Satisfaction, is the Associate Director of the Center for Sexual Health Promotion in the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at Indiana University (IU) where she is a Research Scientist (read about her research on the Center’s site). She is also a sexual health educator at The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction where she writes and hosts audio podcasts of the Kinsey Confidential column and coordinates educational programming.

Dr. Herbenick has a PhD in Health Behavior from IU, a Master’s degree in Public Health Education (also from IU) and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park. In addition, she is certified as a Sexuality Educator from the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists. Dr. Herbenick is also a member of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality.

Research
Dr. Herbenick has authored or co-authored a number of scientific publications on the topics of women’s sexual function, men’s sexuality, sexual enhancement products (e.g., vibrators, lubricants), sexual pleasure, cancer and sexuality, sex education, and other topics. These have appeared in publications such as the Journal of Sexual Medicine, Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, Sexual & Relationship Therapy, American Journal of Public Health, Journal of Sex Research, Sexual Health, the International Journal of Sexual Health, the American Journal of Sexuality Education, International Journal of STD & AIDS, Sex Education, Cancer Nursing, and Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Teaching and Writing
Debby has taught undergraduate and graduate level human sexuality classes to more than a thousand students and lectures on a range of topics including sexual development, sexual enhancement, women’s sexual function and adult sex education. In addition, Debby writes regular sex columns for Men’s Health magazine, Time Out Chicago magazine, Velocity, Cheeky Chicago , Psychology Today and she has also written for Glamour magazine and Gizmodo.

Print, Web, Radio and Television
Dr. Herbenick has provided expert opinion about sex and relationships for writers and producers of print, online and broadcast media including the Today Show, the Tyra Banks Show, Discovery Health, the New York Times, Sirius Satellite Radio, The Takeaway with John Hockenberry (WNYC), Voices in the Family with Dr. Dan Gottlieb (WHYY), San Francisco Chronicle, LA Times, Marie Clare, Men’s Health, Elle, Men’s Fitness, Women’s Health, Glamour, Essence, SELF, Cosmo (US), Cosmo (UK), Maximum Fitness, Ladies Home Journal, WebMD, The Nest, and The Guardian (UK), among others.
