Australian police minister hears: “there are too many reports of you in your underwear for me to ignore”

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

An Australian police minister had to resign after reports surfaced that he stripped down to his underwear and "dirty danced" over the chest of a female politician. Read the full article on MSNBC.com’s web site. What do you think about standards for politicians when it comes to sex? Quite a few political careers have been ruined - or at least tainted - over reports (or evidence) of extramarital affairs, bathroom stall foot tapping, solicitation of sex workers or other various sex acts or intentions. Are there cases in which reports of sex acts (e.g., those that are consensual and legal) - even if embarrassing - should simply be swept under the rug? And others that politicians should be held more accountable for? Where, in your opinion, is the line? Or is it all a grey area?

HuffPo highlights two men pretending to make out during a CNN Report

Check out the fake making out video here. It’s fantastic, and a light spot to an otherwise grim day on the financial world here in the US.

Swedish pharmacy sued for sex toy discrimination against men

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Ah, Sweden. What more can be said about a country that is already so progressive that it carries sex toys in its drug stores that it’s to the point where men have filed a lawsuit against a state-run store called Apoteket for failure to sell sex toys for men even though it offers sex toys for women? In an article about the issue, one petitioner was quoted as saying that the stores had a "misguided and untrue view of sexuality whereby a woman with a dildo is seen as liberated, strong and independent, while a man with a blow-up plastic vagina is viewed as disgusting and perverted". The word from the company is that "there are no products of good quality for men on the market".

But there are! This is one reason why I enjoy consulting and providing education for companies that design, manufacture, or distribute sexual enhancement products - there is still so much to learn. There are indeed quite a few good toys available for men, women and couples.

Alaska’s sexual health

Monday, September 1st, 2008

For the sake of context, it may be worth noting that Alaska historically is frequently ranked as one of the states (and sometimes THE state) with the highest rates of chlamydia infection and also typically has astronomical rates of sexual assault and rape. In addition, this state of 600,000+ tends to have substantial rates of health disparities, as do other states, that deserve attention and funding. Then again, it seems that Alaska does provide fairly good sexuality education in some places as well as access to family planning services, and they seem to have had a decline in teen pregnancies in recent years (source: Guttmacher Institute).

Pole dancing studio not allowed to operate

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

According to CNN (which is always good for breaking news reports like how pole dancing classes can "strip off pounds"), a woman who is trying to open a dance studio to teach both pole dancing classes and belly dancing classes is not being allowed to operate her business so far. This is a dance studio; not a stripo club or a bar. Check out the video here:

Sex and religion: Portland style

I took this photo in Oregon. We were driving along and couldn’t resist the (likely intentional) juxtaposition of these two signs.

Sex crimes against children (boys and girls both) in Afghanistan

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

CNN has posted an important article about a family in Afghanistan who has bravely come forward to talk about the rape of their 12 year old daughter and the lack of justice in their community. Rape and sexual assault are, unfortunately, fairly common experiences for young girls and boys in Afghanistan and given issues related to Islamic law that require there to be 4 adult male witnesses to rape (!), very few are actually prosecuted. I strongly encourage you to take a few minutes out of your day in order to become aware of the situation faced by these Afghani families by reading the CNN article - and how, in spite of the absence of news about Afghanistan, this is a situation where no news most certainly does not mean good news. (Case in point: one of the recent rape victims was a 3 year old child).

The Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA) is an activist and advocacy group based in Afghanistan that aims to educate women, advocate for the rights of women and children (both girls and boys) and that demands humane treatment and an expansion of justice. They feature heavily in the CNN article; you can learn more about their work and how to help them on their web site, such as through donations of money, books, cameras to document certain issues, or ways to raise awareness.

I know that we all have busy days and lives, and families and friends of your own. Given the general neglect of Afghanis (in spite of our country’s presence there), I’d like to encourage you to consider ways to embrace these individuals who are part of our human family, by learning about and becoming aware of some of these issues, even if there is little else that you feel you can do at this time.

Thanks for your time.

Obama describes his support for GLBT family issues

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

In response to a letter from the Family Equality Council, Barack Obama has described plans to support GLBT-related issues, including rights related to families. John McCain reportedly did not respond to the letter but recently told the New York Times that he did not believe that same-sex couples should adopt children.

As someone who once worked in connection with the foster care system, and had a chance to see how desperately many children need to be fostered and, in some cases, adopted by loving individuals or couples, it always upsets me when people who have the power to help - sometimes literally - to save or protect a child’s life, fail to do so.

More unrest and violence in Kenya

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Oh no. As you remember, I’ve posted previously about my experiences working in Kenya this summer, and how the political-related violence over the past few years also has caused issues with patients getting their medications for HIV, and with the general displacement of hundreds of thousands of people, as well as much violence and killing. It seems that unrest is cropping up again - check out this NY Times article that was just recently posted.

What does a $5500 Escort look like?

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Do they really look any different from $200/hour escorts or $1000/hour escorts? In my opinion, not so much - what one is often paying for is the overall service of the business operation - meaning, one in which your privacy feels guaranteed. Not that that always works! But certainly you can get a full range of services from highly attractive women and men for less - but you may not feel as "secure" with your identity. I guess the Spitzer (and Heidi Fleiss) cases are among the many that suggest that even high rates do not necessarily protect one’s privacy.

But if you want to see what a $5500 escort looks like, this is what came to me via email today… see photo after the  jump.
