“Staying in to read” takes on a whole new meaning in this amusing and very sexed-up tribute to science fiction author Ray Bradbury.

I appreciate the message that reading is sexy, and I’m intrigued by the singer’s use of book as masturbation tool. However, it seems like the video might be packaging geek culture in sexy mainstream drag, rather than affirming that bookworms and nerds can be sexy on their own terms.

    This video, while humorous, also seems to perpetuate the phenomenon (which shows up in both mainstream and and geek culture, I’ve noticed) of women whose main object is to be hot and attract/support men, rather than be talented and awesome in their own right. Not that there is anything wrong with wanting to be sexy or fuck whoever, but it gets tedious when it seems like that is the only role available for women to get any attention.

    And I totally see your point about it being in mainstream drag. Other than the token big glasses that apparently define being a geek, she very much embodies mainstream-sexy rather than any sort of alternative.

    Hi Vanessa–thanks for the comment! I agree, the video is problematic for continuing the mainstream “women are sexy and exist to be fucked by men” trope. At the same time, though, the singer doesn’t actually have sex with Ray Bradbury–she fantasizes about it, and has sex with herself… so in a way, the video *almost* subverts some of the mainstream stereotypes.

    Honestly, I’m still a little torn about it… but as I’m also a huge Ray Bradbury fan, I was too amused to not pass it on.
